Hamas has announced the release of three female Israeli hostages on Sunday. While Israel has confirmed receiving the list, it has not publicly disclosed their names. However, reports identify the three women as Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher, and Emily Damari, a dual UK-Israeli citizen.

Details About the Hostages

  • Romi Gonen (24)

Gonen was abducted on October 7, 2023, from the Nova music festival. During the attack, she was reportedly shot in the hand. Her mother, Meirav Leshem Gonen, shared that other hostages who were released reported that Gonen’s injuries worsened during her captivity. Israeli media has confirmed her inclusion on the release list.

  • Doron Steinbrecher (31)

Steinbrecher, a veterinary nurse, was kidnapped from her apartment in Kfar Aza, near the Gaza border. A video released by Hamas in January 2024 showed her with two other abducted women. Concerns about her health were raised by her family, particularly by her brother, Dor Steinbrecher, as she requires daily medication, which she likely did not have access to in captivity.

  • Emily Damari (28)

A dual UK-Israeli citizen, Damari was kidnapped from her home in Kfar Aza. Her mother, Mandy Damari, revealed that Emily was shot in the hand, injured by shrapnel in her leg, and taken blindfolded to Gaza. Damari remains the sole British national currently held in Gaza.

Context of the Abductions

The hostages were among 251 individuals abducted by Hamas-led militants during a large-scale attack on October 7, 2023. Currently, 94 hostages are still in captivity, with 34 confirmed dead (though this number could be higher). The remaining hostages include 81 males and 13 females, with two of them being children aged five or younger.

The Ongoing Crisis

The planned release of the three women offers a glimmer of hope amid a dire humanitarian and security crisis. The international community continues to monitor the situation, advocating for the safe return of all hostages and addressing the broader conflict’s impact on civilians.
