As the January 19 deadline for a federal ban or forced sale of TikTok looms, the platform’s leadership is taking steps to reassure its 7,000 U.S. employees. In an internal memo reviewed by Reuters, TikTok emphasized its commitment to employee wellbeing and outlined plans to secure their pay, benefits, and employment, regardless of the outcome.

Employee Security Amid Uncertainty

The memo, addressed to TikTok employees, stated:
“Your wellbeing is a top priority. As employees in the US, your employment, pay, and benefits are secure, and our offices will remain open, even if this situation isn’t resolved by the January 19 deadline.”

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has assured workers that it will continue operations even if the Supreme Court upholds the law that could ban the app or mandate its sale.

Legal and Political Challenges

The U.S. Supreme Court has shown signs of supporting the law passed in April, despite appeals from lawmakers and President-elect Donald Trump to extend the deadline. Trump, who will take office a day after the law’s enforcement date, has expressed a desire to seek a political resolution.

TikTok leadership stated, “Our team remains laser-focused on planning for various scenarios and continuing to chart a way forward.”

The company also clarified that the law does not directly affect employee operations but instead targets the U.S. user experience on the platform.

Impact on TikTok Users

If the Supreme Court does not intervene by Sunday:

  • New downloads of TikTok on Apple’s and Google’s app stores would be banned.
  • Existing users could continue accessing the app temporarily, but services would degrade over time as support from other companies ceases.

TikTok’s internal communication emphasized its ongoing efforts to protect both employees and the 170 million users in the United States.

Navigating a Critical Juncture

As TikTok faces a pivotal moment in its U.S. operations, the company is taking proactive measures to mitigate uncertainty and ensure stability for its workforce. This legal battle will shape TikTok’s U.S. future and test global tech policy.
