WASHINGTON:  President Donald Trump swiftly ended Secret Service protection for former National Security Adviser John Bolton within hours of taking office. Bolton had previously required the protection due to ongoing threats from Iran. Trump initially terminated this security during his first term, but it was reinstated by President Joe Biden in 2021.

Bolton’s Security Threats Rooted in Iran-Linked Plots

Bolton has faced significant threats, including a 2022 Department of Justice case against an Iranian Revolutionary Guard member for attempting to hire a hitman to assassinate him. These threats have persisted, underscoring the necessity of protection.

Bolton Responds with Sharp Criticism

Bolton expressed disappointment in a statement on social media, condemning Trump’s decision while acknowledging Biden’s extension of his protection. He highlighted the ongoing threat from Iran and contrasted Trump’s move with Biden’s handling of his security needs.

Bolton’s Statement in Full

“I am disappointed but not surprised that President Trump has decided to terminate the protection provided by the United States Secret Service. Despite my criticisms of President Biden’s national-security policies, he made the decision to extend that protection in 2021. The Justice Department charged an Iranian Revolutionary Guard official for plotting my assassination. That threat persists, as demonstrated by the recent arrest of someone arranging President Trump’s own assassination. The American people can judge for themselves which President made the right call.”
