Washington: In a major announcement, Donald Trump issued pardons and dismissals for almost all January 6 Capitol attack cases.

Pardons Cover Nearly 1,270 Convicted Individuals

On Monday, Trump signed a proclamation pardoning almost 1,270 individuals convicted for their roles in the January 6 attack. These pardons include nonviolent and violent offenders, some facing significant felony charges.

The order also directed the Justice Department to drop approximately 300 ongoing cases. A total of 14 individuals charged with serious crimes, including seditious conspiracy, were granted sentence commutations.

A Broader Reach Than Expected

This decision surprised many, including some of Trump’s allies and advisers. GOP leaders, such as Vice President JD Vance, had urged focusing on nonviolent offenders. However, the proclamation applied broadly to both violent and nonviolent participants.

“Full, complete, and unconditional pardons” were granted to offenders, even those convicted of assaults on law enforcement. This group includes individuals like Julian Khater, who used a chemical spray against Officer Brian Sicknick, and Robert Palmer, who attacked officers with a fire extinguisher and wooden plank.

Commutations for High-Profile Seditious Conspiracy Cases

Trump commuted sentences for 14 far-right extremists convicted or charged with seditious conspiracy. This group includes members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. Unlike a full pardon, the commutations allow their release but do not erase convictions.

Dropping 300 Pending Cases

The order also instructed the attorney general to dismiss roughly 300 remaining January 6 cases still in court. This sweeping measure aims to end legal proceedings related to the Capitol riot entirely.
