PARIS: Two trams collided in Strasbourg, eastern France, on Saturday afternoon, causing numerous injuries, though none were critical.

The collision occurred in a tunnel near the city’s central train station. Emergency responders were deployed immediately to the scene.

Rescue Services Mobilize Quickly

René Cellier, head of the Bas-Rhin Fire and Rescue Service, reported the deployment of 130 firefighters and 50 rescue vehicles.

Around 100 people uninjured in the crash were treated for shock and stress. A wide safety perimeter was established.

Many Injured, No Lives Threatened

“Approximately 50 people sustained moderate injuries like scalp wounds, broken clavicles, and knee sprains,” Cellier stated.

He emphasized the absence of critical injuries, saying, “It could have been much worse.” Efforts to ensure public safety continued.

Cause of Collision Under Investigation

The exact cause remains unknown, but reports suggest one tram might have been reversing when the collision happened.

Local media shared images of two damaged trams, one of which had derailed within the tunnel. Officials launched an investigation.

Mayor Expresses Gratitude

Strasbourg Mayor Jeanne Barseghian described the crash as a “brutal collision.” She praised the rescue teams for their prompt response.

“I am here with the injured and emergency crews,” she said on X, urging residents to avoid obstructing operations.

Strasbourg’s First Major Tram Incident

Strasbourg, which reinstated tram services in 1994, had not experienced a significant tram accident before Saturday, French media reported.

Cleanup operations persisted into Saturday evening. Authorities requested people stay away from the station area for their safety.

Impact of the Collision

Despite the injuries, the response showcased swift coordination between local officials and emergency teams. Further updates are awaited.

The investigation’s findings may guide future safety measures, ensuring accidents like this remain rare.
