TOKYO: Tomiko Itoka , the world’s oldest Japanese woman, passed away at the age of 116.

According to Japanese media, Itoka died on December 29 in a nursing home where she had been living.

Japan’s Ministry of Health confirmed her death on Saturday. She had been suffering from illness for quite some time.

It is noteworthy that in September last year, her name was recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest woman.

Tomiko Itoka was born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka. She was the eldest of three siblings.

In December 2023, following the death of 116-year-old Fusa Tatsumi in Kashiwara City, Osaka Prefecture, Itoka became the oldest living woman in Japan.

Notably, Japanese women are known for their remarkable longevity. However, Japan faces challenges due to its aging population.

A report revealed that over 95,000 people in Japan are aged 100 or above, with 88% being women.

Out of Japan’s 124 million population, nearly one-third are aged 65 or older, reflecting the country’s demographic shift.
