MOSCOW: Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed strengthening their nations’ partnership in a video conference Tuesday.

Strengthening a Strategic Partnership

Hours after U.S. President Donald Trump’s inauguration, Xi promised to elevate China-Russia relations to new heights this year.

Both leaders emphasized their commitment to deeper strategic coordination and mutual support amid global uncertainties, China’s Foreign Ministry said.

Annual Tradition Reinforces Close Relationship

The conference call continues their yearly tradition of connecting around the new year, symbolizing their growing personal rapport.

Their cooperation has expanded, particularly as Russia faces international isolation due to its actions in Ukraine.

Shared Vision for a Global Order

Putin applauded record-high trade between their nations and acknowledged their shared aim of reshaping the global power balance.

“We advocate for a fair multipolar world order and secure indivisible security globally and in Eurasia,” said Putin.

He claimed the collaboration between China and Russia contributes to stability in international affairs.

Preparing for Relations with Trump Administration

Xi and Putin also discussed their countries’ relationships with the United States under Trump’s leadership, according to Russian officials.

Xi briefed Putin on his recent call with Trump before the U.S. president’s inauguration, where various topics, including Ukraine, were covered.

Dialogue with New U.S. Leadership

During their hour-and-a-half discussion, the leaders touched on potential future contact with the Trump administration, said Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov.

“Discussions included aspects of how both countries might engage with the new U.S. government,” Ushakov told Russian media.

Expanding Trade and Cooperation

China-Russia trade hit a record high last year, with both leaders highlighting the importance of practical economic cooperation.

This collaboration reflects their shared goals of counterbalancing perceived U.S. dominance in global affairs.

Moving Forward Together

Xi stressed using the stability of China-Russia relations to navigate external challenges, strengthening the foundation of their partnership.

The video meeting showcased the growing influence of their alliance in shaping international dynamics in an uncertain geopolitical climate.
