QUITO: Ecuador’s presidential election will proceed to a second round after no candidate secured an outright victory.
Electoral officials called it a “technical tie” between incumbent Daniel Noboa and left-wing challenger Luisa Gonzalez.
Both candidates received nearly equal percentages of votes, making the second round highly unpredictable.
The run-off will take place in April, determining Ecuador’s next leader.
Unexpected Results
Pre-election polls suggested a clearer outcome, but results were much closer than expected.
Noboa’s supporters initially celebrated, believing an early exit poll suggested outright victory.
His followers gathered in Quito, waving flags and wearing T-shirts with his image.
Life-sized cut-outs of Noboa, depicting various outfits, have become a popular campaign symbol.
Noboa’s Security Measures
Noboa’s presidency has focused on reducing severe gang violence in Ecuador.
He introduced military deployments in streets and prisons to control rising crime.
Supporters believe his security policies have improved stability despite ongoing challenges.
“The military presence has helped reduce fear,” said a supporter, Fernanda Iza.
Public Opinion
Iza, 45, expressed hope that Noboa would continue his security efforts.
“There are still problems, but his leadership has made a difference,” she added.
Teenager Juan Diego Escobar believes Noboa has a strong chance in the second round.
“Most voters from other candidates will likely choose Noboa,” Escobar predicted.
Future Challenges
Noboa’s handling of crime and the economy will be key in the final election round.
Many voters seek both safety and economic improvements in Ecuador.
Luisa Gonzalez, Noboa’s opponent, will work to shift undecided voters in her favor.
The final vote in April will decide Ecuador’s next leader and future policies.
