Bengaluru: British singer Ed Sheeran was stopped by police while attempting to perform on a busy street in Bengaluru on Sunday. Officials said he lacked the required permits for a public performance.
A video of a police officer unplugging Sheeran’s microphone on Church Street quickly went viral. Authorities informed ANI news agency that his team’s request was denied to prevent crowd congestion.
Singer’s Response
Sheeran later addressed the issue on Instagram, clarifying, “We had permission to busk. It was pre-planned and not random.” He reassured fans, saying, “All good though, see you at the show tonight.”
The incident happened before his Mathematics Tour concert at NICE Grounds in Bengaluru. Fans criticized the authorities, with one commenting, “We live in an uncleocracy where uncles love stopping fun.”
Authorities Justify Action
However, local MP PC Mohan supported the police decision, stating, “Even global stars must follow local rules – no permit, no performance.”
Sheeran is currently on a 15-day tour in India, having already performed in Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai. His next concerts are scheduled in Shillong and Delhi.
Unexpected Performances
At his Bengaluru concert, Sheeran thrilled fans by performing two Telugu-language songs with singer Shilpa Rao. Last year, he collaborated with Punjabi artist Diljit Dosanjh in Birmingham.
He also recently worked with sitar player Megha Rawoot on a fresh rendition of his hit song Shape of You.
India’s Growing Concert Scene
India’s live music industry is expanding, with a rising demand for international performances. Sheeran’s biggest tour in India follows recent shows by Dua Lipa and Coldplay.
A Bank of Baroda report estimates that India’s concert economy could reach $700-900 million, driven by higher disposable incomes.
