Dublin: Irish boxer John Cooney has tragically died at the age of 28 after suffering a brain injury during a title fight. His promoter, Mark Dunlop, confirmed the heartbreaking news on Saturday.
A Brave Battle for Survival
Cooney sustained the fatal injury during his Celtic super-featherweight title defense against Welsh fighter Nathan Howells at Ulster Hall in Belfast on February 1. The referee stopped the fight in the ninth round, and officials rushed Cooney to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital. He underwent emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain caused by an intracranial hemorrhage.
Despite the tireless efforts of medical staff, Cooney succumbed to his injuries after a week-long battle for his life. His promoter, Mark Dunlop, expressed deep sorrow in an Instagram post, saying, “It is with complete devastation that we have to announce that after a week of battling for his life, John Cooney has sadly passed away.”

British boxing legend Ricky Hatton paid tribute on Instagram, saying, “This doesn’t happen often in our sport, but when it does, it’s heartbreaking. My love and best wishes are with John’s family.” Irish boxing promoter and former featherweight champion Barry McGuigan also shared his condolences on X, calling Cooney a “fine young boxer” and sending sympathies to his loved ones.

John Cooney won the Celtic super-featherweight title by defeating Liam Gaynor in November 2023. After nearly a year away due to a hand injury, he made a strong comeback, defeating Tampela Maharusi in October 2024.
