Geneva: Two mass graves filled with migrant bodies have been discovered in Libya, with some victims bearing gunshot wounds. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has expressed deep concern over this tragic incident.
Grave Locations
Nineteen bodies were found in Jakharrah, approximately 400 km south of Benghazi. Another grave in the Alkufra desert contained at least 30 bodies, possibly up to 70. Authorities have yet to determine the nationalities of the deceased.
Police Raid
These graves were discovered following a police raid in which hundreds of migrants were rescued from traffickers. Security forces continue operations to apprehend those responsible for the deaths.
IOM’s Response
“The loss of these lives is yet another tragic reminder of the dangers faced by migrants embarking on perilous journeys,” said Nicoletta Giordano, IOM Libya Chief of Mission. She emphasized that many migrants endure severe exploitation, violence, and abuse, highlighting the need for stronger protections.
Investigation and Assistance
IOM has acknowledged Libya’s efforts in investigating the deaths and urged authorities to ensure dignified recovery, identification, and transfer of remains while assisting families. UN partner agencies are also involved in these efforts.
Past Incidents
Last March, authorities discovered another mass grave containing 65 migrant bodies in southwestern Libya. Migrant deaths in Libya remain alarmingly high.
Land Route Dangers
According to IOM’s Missing Migrants Project, 965 migrant deaths and disappearances were recorded in Libya in 2024. More than 22% of these fatalities occurred on land routes, which are often overlooked. The lack of data, search and rescue operations, and protection measures make these journeys even more dangerous.
Humanitarian Assistance
IOM continues to provide humanitarian aid to vulnerable migrants while strengthening Libyan authorities’ capacity for life-saving search and rescue operations. Training in human rights obligations and international law is a key part of this effort.
Urgent Call for Action
IOM urges regional governments and authorities to enhance collaboration and protection measures for migrants. Ensuring safety and legal protections at every stage of their journey is crucial to preventing further loss of life.
