Philadelphia: A medevac jet crashed in a northeast Philadelphia neighborhood on Friday night, causing a massive explosion. The twin-engine Learjet 55 carried six people, including a young patient and her mother. The aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport. Authorities confirmed the explosion through video footage and eyewitness reports.
Flight Path and Rapid Descent
The aircraft was operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance. The child and her mother were returning to Mexico after medical treatment. The jet took off around 6 p.m. ET and climbed to 1,650 feet. Suddenly, it began a steep descent at 11,000 feet per minute.
Air traffic controllers attempted to contact the plane multiple times. A recording from LiveATC.net captured repeated calls for the aircraft. Shortly after, a controller stated, “We have a lost aircraft.” The jet then disappeared from radar tracking.
Crash Impact and Emergency Response
Several homes and vehicles were damaged by the crash. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker confirmed the destruction during a news conference. Officials have not yet provided details on casualties. Firefighters and emergency teams responded quickly to control the flames.
Residents described a loud explosion followed by intense fire. Videos from the scene showed burning wreckage scattered throughout the area. Specialists have not decided the reason for the accident. Investigators are now analyzing the wreckage for clues.
Investigation and Safety Concerns
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation. Experts will review flight data and examine the aircraft’s remains. Investigators will check for possible mechanical failures or pilot errors. The jet’s maintenance history will also be evaluated.
Medevac flights provide lifesaving transport for critical patients. However, this incident raises new safety concerns. Authorities may conduct additional inspections of similar aircraft.
