RIYADH: The United States and Russia will hold discussions on the Ukraine war starting Tuesday in Saudi Arabia.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio will attend alongside Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz.
Ukraine will not participate directly, a Ukrainian official confirmed.
Keith Kellogg, Trump’s former Russia-Ukraine envoy, will visit Kyiv this week for separate discussions.
On Sunday, President Donald Trump stated that Ukraine would be involved in negotiations.
UK’s Commitment
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced willingness to send British troops to Ukraine for enforcing a peace deal.
He emphasized that such a move would only happen if necessary.
Starmer wrote in the Daily Telegraph, stressing that Ukraine’s security strengthens Europe’s security.
He urged European nations to boost defense spending and take more responsibility within NATO.
However, he said US involvement remains key to maintaining peace.
European Concerns
European leaders worry the US-Russia talks might leave them sidelined.
Starmer plans to meet Trump and other G7 leaders in the coming days.
On Monday, an emergency summit on Ukraine will take place in France.
French President Emmanuel Macron will host an informal meeting with key European leaders.
The summit will include leaders from Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, and top EU officials.
NATO’s Role
Starmer called the European summit a historic opportunity for national security.
He stated that maintaining unity between the US and Europe is crucial.
He warned that internal divisions should not distract from external threats.
NATO’s Secretary General will also attend the summit.
The meeting aims to ensure a coordinated response to the Ukraine conflict.
Saudi Arabia’s Influence
Trump has highlighted Saudi Arabia’s growing role in diplomatic efforts.
The kingdom has become increasingly involved in US foreign policy under his leadership.
Just last week, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman facilitated the release of Marc Fogel from Russia.
Trump believes Saudi mediation could help end the Ukraine war.
The upcoming talks signal the kingdom’s expanding global diplomatic influence.
