Riyadh: Today, Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. This meeting followed President Donald Trump’s conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 12. The discussion aimed to strengthen US-Russia relations. Joining Secretary Rubio were National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Special Envoy Ambassador Steve Witkoff. President Trump chose them for this crucial diplomatic mission. Lavrov was accompanied by Yuri Ushakov, a key aide to the Russian President.

President Trump’s primary goal is to stop the ongoing violence. The United States commits to achieving peace and uses its global influence to bring countries together. Trump believes he is the only leader capable of facilitating an agreement between Ukraine and Russia.

Key Agreements:

  1. Establish a Consultation Mechanism: Both parties will create a framework to address irritants in their bilateral relationship. The goal is to normalize operations within their diplomatic missions.
  1. High-Level Teams for Conflict Resolution: The United States and Russia will appoint respective teams to work towards ending the conflict in Ukraine. The aim is to achieve a solution that is enduring, sustainable, and acceptable to all sides involved.
  1. Future Cooperation: Both nations will lay the groundwork for cooperation on geopolitical interests. There are also historic economic and investment opportunities that could arise from successfully resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

The parties involved pledged to stay engaged and ensure that the process progresses in a timely and effective manner. It was emphasized that one phone call followed by one meeting is not enough to establish lasting peace. Concrete actions are necessary, and today’s discussions mark an important step forward in that direction.

Lastly, the team expressed gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for hosting the meeting, recognizing the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud. This engagement reflects a commitment to diplomacy and a hopeful outlook for peace in the region.
