Khartoum: The Sudanese army has ended a nearly two-year siege imposed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on El-Obeid.

The army announced the breakthrough after regaining control of the North Kordofan capital from RSF fighters.

This victory follows a series of military advances, including recapturing territories in Khartoum from the paramilitary group.

El-Obeid is a vital transportation hub linking Sudan’s capital to the war-torn Darfur region.

The city’s liberation marks a significant turning point in the ongoing conflict between the army and the RSF.

Ongoing Conflict

Sudan’s conflict erupted in April 2023, leading to tens of thousands of deaths and massive displacement.

The army holds control over the north and east, while RSF dominates Darfur and parts of the south.

The RSF recently signed a political agreement in Nairobi, seeking to establish a separate government.

The Sudanese government rejected the move, stating it would not recognize any breakaway administration.

Kenya defended its diplomatic stance, saying it was offering a neutral platform for dialogue.

Jubilation in El-Obeid

Sudanese soldiers were welcomed with celebrations as they marched into the newly liberated city.

A military spokesperson, Nabil Abdallah, confirmed that RSF units were dismantled during the army’s offensive.

Civilians endured nearly two years under RSF control, with severe restrictions on movement and supplies.

Finance Minister Jibril Ibrahim stated the victory was crucial for lifting the RSF’s hold on El-Fasher.

He added that humanitarian aid could now reach Kordofan, relieving thousands suffering from shortages.

Strategic Progress

Activist Dallia Abdlemoniem described the army’s success as “significant” in the broader fight against RSF forces.

She noted that the military was advancing toward Darfur, where RSF maintains strong influence.

The RSF’s control over western Sudan has been a major challenge for the army’s counteroffensive.

Both factions have been accused of serious crimes against civilians during the prolonged war.

The U.S. has imposed sanctions on both army and RSF leaders for human rights violations.

Accusations and Denials

International observers have accused the RSF of committing genocide in Darfur, an allegation it strongly denies.

The army has also faced accusations of atrocities, further deepening Sudan’s humanitarian crisis.

Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ali Youssef warned against any recognition of a parallel RSF government.

The Sudanese government maintains that it is the only legitimate authority in the country.

Despite criticism, Kenya insisted that its mediation efforts were neutral and aimed at foster
