Border Reinforcement
As part of the agreement, Mexico will deploy 10,000 National Guard troops at its northern border. These troops will focus on preventing illegal drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl. The deployment is an immediate response to one of Trump’s primary concerns regarding the US-Mexico border. Sheinbaum emphasized that the border enforcement would be strengthened rapidly.
Weapon Trafficking
Sheinbaum also announced that the US and Mexico would collaborate to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons. This effort aims to curb the flow of firearms from the US into Mexico, a major issue for both nations. The leaders have agreed on measures to disrupt the illicit weapons trade. Mexico’s focus will be on curbing violence linked to drug cartels.
Future Cooperation
Sheinbaum confirmed that both nations are committed to working together on these critical security issues. The cooperation on border security and drug trafficking is expected to improve relations between the two countries. The agreement is viewed as a positive step in the ongoing negotiations over trade and border management.
Mexico-US Relations
The delay in tariffs and the increased security efforts indicate a thaw in tensions between Mexico and the US. Both sides hope the deal will help stabilize the region and improve cross-border relations. The focus will now be on enforcing the measures discussed to address illegal activities.
The next month will be crucial in seeing how the new agreement is implemented on both sides of the border.
