NEW YORK: The United States joined Russia, Israel, Belarus, and North Korea in avoiding blame on Vladimir Putin for Ukraine’s invasion.
The UN General Assembly considered two separate resolutions on the war’s third anniversary.
Ukraine’s proposal demanded Russia’s withdrawal and accountability for war crimes.
It passed with 93 votes, with all EU countries except Hungary supporting the resolution.
Eighteen nations, including the US, Russia, and North Korea, opposed it, while 64, including China, abstained.

US Counter-Proposal

The US submitted its own resolution calling for peace but not blaming Russia.
European nations amended it, adding language condemning Russia’s actions.
The modifications reaffirmed Ukraine’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
The US, unable to support the amended text, ultimately abstained from voting.
This led to criticism over Washington’s shifting stance on Ukraine’s war.

Voting Outcome

The amended US-drafted resolution secured 93 votes in favor.
Seventy-three nations abstained from the vote.
Eight countries, including Russia, opposed the measure.
Russia attempted to insert references to the “root causes” of the war.
The bid to modify the resolution in Russia’s favor was unsuccessful.

Ukrainian Response

Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Betsa Mariana spoke before the vote.
She emphasized that the war extended beyond Ukraine’s borders.
Mariana argued that the war concerns every country’s right to sovereignty.
She insisted on Ukraine’s right to independence and self-determination.
Ukraine remains firm in holding Russia accountable for its actions.

Global Reactions

The UN vote highlighted growing divisions over the war.
The US stance sparked debate over its diplomatic approach.
European nations reaffirmed strong backing for Ukraine.
Russia continued pushing for an alternative narrative.
The war’s future remains uncertain amid ongoing international tensions.
