MOSCOW: Russia claims its military has retaken Sudzha, Kursk’s largest town once occupied by Ukraine. The victory threatens Kyiv’s bargaining power in negotiations.
Moscow’s defense ministry confirmed the capture of Sudzha, Melovoy, and Podol, highlighting progress in its offensive operations.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) verified Russian advances, reporting that troops have also moved into southern Zaoleshenka.
Sudzha, with a pre-war population of about 5,000, was among the few populated areas still under Ukraine’s control.
The capture strengthens Russia’s position amid talks of a ceasefire, which Ukraine has already accepted.

Ceasefire Talks

US special envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in Moscow for discussions. Tass reported his visit, indicating diplomatic movements.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expects US officials to brief Russia on a proposed 30-day ceasefire across the frontlines.
Peskov expressed confidence in reclaiming the entire Kursk region. He emphasized saving Russian military and civilian lives.
Putin visited Kursk on Wednesday, wearing military uniform, reaffirming Moscow’s goal of full control.
The Russian leader told troops that Kursk should be liberated quickly, boosting morale amid ongoing operations.

Buffer Zone

Putin suggested a security buffer along Russia’s border with Ukraine, aiming to prevent future incursions.
Captured Ukrainian soldiers in Kursk will be treated as terrorists, Putin announced.
Ukraine’s attack on Kursk in August was the first ground invasion of Russia by a foreign power since World War II.
Kyiv aimed to pressure Moscow and divert Russian resources from eastern Ukraine.
However, Ukraine has struggled to maintain control over the occupied areas in recent days.

Tactical Retreat

Ukraine’s top general Oleksandr Syrskyi indicated further withdrawals to stronger positions.
His priority is to protect Ukrainian soldiers’ lives, given the difficult situation on the ground.
Syrskyi stated that Sudzha was nearly destroyed by Russian airstrikes before recapture.
Zelensky confirmed Russian forces were exerting maximum pressure on Ukraine’s troops.
Ukraine’s military is focusing on minimizing losses while dealing with increasing attacks.

Ukraine Surrounded

Russia’s top general Valery Gerasimov claimed that Russian troops had reclaimed 86% of lost territory.
He reported that 430 Ukrainian soldiers were captured, and the remaining forces were encircled.
Meanwhile, the US is sending representatives to Moscow to discuss ceasefire conditions.
Donald Trump said that peace negotiations now depend on Russia’s next move.
The  US president declined to say whether he planned to meet Putin soon.
