OTTAWA: Canada will impose 25% tariffs on $155 billion CAD worth of American goods, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Tuesday.
Speaking from Ottawa, he criticized the U.S. for unjustified tariffs on Canada, which officially took effect today.
Trudeau stated that Canada is America’s closest ally, yet the U.S. is engaging in a trade war against them.
He also condemned U.S. efforts to improve relations with Russia while punishing Canada with tariffs.
“Make that make sense,” Trudeau said, emphasizing his frustration with the situation.
Tariffs Breakdown
An immediate 25% tariff will apply to $30 billion CAD worth of U.S. goods, effective today.
The remaining $125 billion CAD worth of American products will be subjected to tariffs in 21 days.
Trudeau assured Canadians that his government will defend their interests against harmful U.S. trade policies.
He stated that Canada remains diplomatic but will not hesitate to protect its economy and citizens.
“We will not back down from a fight when our country’s wellbeing is at stake,” he declared.
WTO Complaint
Trudeau confirmed that Canada will file complaints against the U.S. at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
However, he stressed that Canadian tariffs will remain until U.S. tariffs are completely removed.
He criticized the U.S. for damaging trade relations while pursuing improved ties with adversaries like Russia.
He emphasized that Canada will not tolerate economic pressure from a country that should be an ally.
Trudeau assured businesses and citizens that his government is actively working to resolve the issue.
Fentanyl Allegations
Trudeau also refuted U.S. claims that Canada is not aiding in the fight against illegal fentanyl.
Trump’s justification for the tariffs included accusations that Canada was failing to prevent fentanyl smuggling.
Trudeau called this claim “totally false,” asserting that Canada already has a secure border.
He stated that less than 1% of illegal fentanyl entering the U.S. originates from Canada.
Additionally, he noted that illegal border crossings from Canada to the U.S. remain below 1%.
Firm Stance
Trudeau assured Canadians that his government will continue challenging unfair U.S. trade policies.
He reiterated that Canada will stand firm until American tariffs are fully removed.
The prime minister reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to fair trade and strong economic partnerships.
He urged the U.S. to reconsider its position and return to cooperative trade discussions.
Until then, Canada’s tariffs will remain in place to counteract U.S. economic pressure.
