Kyiv has agreed to a US-proposed 30-day ceasefire, extendable with mutual consent.
This agreement requires Russia to accept and implement the ceasefire concurrently.
The US will inform Russia that reciprocal action is necessary to achieve lasting peace.
Delegations from both nations met in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for over eight hours.
Constructive Talks
A senior Ukrainian official called the discussions with the US “constructive and promising.”
This meeting follows tensions between President Trump and Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
Andriy Yermak, Ukraine’s chief negotiator, emphasized efforts to secure a fair and lasting peace.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz led the US delegation.
Both US officials previously attended direct negotiations with Russia last month.
Ukraine’s Position
Rubio said the US aimed to understand Kyiv’s position and potential concessions for peace.
Ukraine did not specify what compromises, if any, it might offer in negotiations.
Yermak stressed the importance of US security guarantees to prevent future Russian aggression.
Kyiv insists that any ceasefire or peace deal must include solid Western security assurances.
History has shown that Russia often disregards agreements without enforcement mechanisms.
Western Concerns
Many Western allies support Ukraine’s demand for strong security guarantees.
However, the Trump administration has not made concrete commitments regarding these assurances.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized Ukraine’s need for military supplies.
She warned that Putin remains an untrustworthy and hostile leader who must be deterred.
She called for urgent action to close gaps in Ukraine’s military capabilities.
Peace Talks Priority
Yermak acknowledged that security guarantees might not be discussed in this meeting.
Instead, Ukraine focused on initiating a peace process through diplomatic engagement.
He highlighted the importance of having a constructive and open discussion with US officials.
Yermak said the priority was to establish steps toward meaningful negotiations.
