A firearms amnesty in South Yorkshire led to the surrender of over 40 blank-firing weapons during February’s month-long campaign.

Illegal Firearms

The campaign targeted owners of specific top-venting blank firers (TVBFs), identified as easily convertible into lethal weapons.

Tests by the National Crime Agency (NCA) confirmed that four Turkish models could be modified illegally. These include Retay, Ekol, Ceonic ISSC, and Blow.

Under Section 1(6) of the Firearms Act 1982, these models are classified as prohibited firearms under Section 5(1) of the Firearms Act 1968.

Police urged owners to surrender these weapons at designated stations across South Yorkshire’s four districts.

Surrendered Weapons

By the end of the campaign, authorities had collected 34 Turkish TVBFs and 11 other models. This totaled 45 blank-firing firearms.

The effort aimed to reduce the risk of these weapons being illegally converted and used in crimes.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed that these firearms form a significant part of gun-related incidents in recent years.

Police Statement

Detective Inspector Claire Moss from the Armed Crime Team appreciated public cooperation in making South Yorkshire safer.

“I thank everyone who handed over these blank firers, preventing their potential misuse in criminal activities,” she stated.

She emphasized that, over the past two years, these weapons accounted for many firearm discharges and recoveries in the area.

Ongoing Efforts

Authorities continue to monitor and regulate firearms possession, ensuring public safety through strict enforcement of gun laws.

Police encourage residents to report any concerns about illegally held or modified firearms.
