GREENE: Two former teachers from a Georgia Christian school were arrested within days on charges of sexually abusing the same student.

Bonnie Brown, 25, was arrested on March 19 for improper sexual contact with a minor. Sherri Maudlin, 60, was arrested on March 23.

Maudlin faces charges of aggravated child molestation, improper sexual contact by an employee, and statutory rape.

The alleged crimes took place at Nathanael Greene Academy, a small private school in Siloam, Georgia, 80 miles east of Atlanta.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) began its investigation in June 2024 after receiving reports of sexual abuse.

School’s Background

Nathanael Greene Academy has 85 students enrolled and was founded in 1969 as a segregation academy.

A 2018 study found that only three Black students attended the school, despite 40% of the county’s population being Black.

Both Brown and Maudlin graduated from Nathanael Greene Academy. Brown graduated in 2017 and was a homecoming queen.

Maudlin graduated in 1983. Brown was recently a teacher at Washington-Wilkes Primary School but has been fired.

Authorities believe the abuse happened on campus and at other locations.

Victim Speaks Out

The victim, through attorney Ashley Mitchell, stated the teachers “took advantage of their positions.”

“My school did not protect me as a child. I hope these arrests protect other children,” the victim said.

Mitchell revealed that there may be additional teachers involved with other victims.

She emphasized that students often don’t realize they were groomed until after they leave the situation.

Mitchell pointed out a “double standard” in how society views female teachers grooming male students versus male offenders.

Ongoing Investigation

Brown and Maudlin were booked into Greene County Sheriff’s Office jail. Brown’s bond was set at $50,000.

The two teachers were Facebook friends. Brown attended Kennesaw State University, while Maudlin frequently posted about Christianity.

Nathanael Greene Academy stated it is fully cooperating with authorities to ensure student safety.

The investigation is ongoing, and more victims could come forward.

Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Greene County Sheriff’s Office at 706-453-3351.

Once the investigation is complete, the Ocmulgee District Attorney’s Office will proceed with prosecution.
