DISPUR: The northeastern Indian state of Assam has banned beef consumption in public places, including restaurants and events.

This move expands a previous restriction on beef sales near religious sites, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced.

Beef can still be bought from stores and consumed privately or within designated private spaces in the state.

The decision reflects India’s ongoing beef consumption controversy, deeply linked to religious and cultural sensitivities, especially for Hindus.

Assam’s 2021 law had already banned beef sales in areas with large Hindu populations and near temples.

The BJP-led government’s stance mirrors other states under Narendra Modi’s rule, where beef consumption faces growing restrictions.

However, the beef ban has sparked political debates, with critics arguing it infringes on individual freedom and choice.

Opposition leaders argue the move undermines religious inclusivity, especially in a multicultural state like Assam.
