DAMASCUS: Opposition forces in Syria transferred American citizen Travis Timmerman to U.S. military personnel, who then transported him to Jordan, according to two U.S. officials on Friday.
The operation involved troops from Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S. campaign targeting ISIS, a third official noted.
The transfer occurred at the Al-Tanf garrison in southern Syria, a base for anti-ISIS missions, the first official revealed.
“After the fall of the Assad regime, American citizen Travis Timmerman was released from a prison near Damascus on December 9. CENTCOM is working with the Department of State to ensure his safe return,” said a second official.
In an interview with CBS News, Timmerman disclosed that he had been detained in Syria for several months after illegally crossing the border from Lebanon. He stated he had entered Syria for “spiritual reasons.”
On Friday, his mother and stepfather told CNN that they had endured months of worry, having had no communication with their son for seven months.
