MOSCOW:  A high-ranking Russian general, accused by Ukraine of orchestrating chemical weapon attacks, was killed in a bomb explosion in Moscow, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Defense Troops, died alongside his assistant when a remotely detonated explosive device planted in an electric scooter detonated outside an apartment complex, approximately 7 kilometers (4 miles) from the Kremlin.

Russia’s Investigative Committee launched a criminal investigation into the incident, stating that forensic teams and law enforcement are actively working at the scene.

Russian General Kirillov, who had held his position since 2017, faced charges in absentia on Monday by Ukraine for ordering the use of prohibited chemical munitions in the ongoing conflict. Ukraine’s Security Service claims that over 4,800 documented cases of chemical weapon deployment have occurred under his command since the war began.

The UK had previously imposed sanctions on Kirillov, condemning his actions as the “inhumane use of chemical weapons” on Ukrainian battlefields.

A source linked to Ukraine’s security services confirmed to CNN that Kyiv was responsible for Kirillov’s targeted killing. “Kirillov was a war criminal and an absolutely legitimate target. Those who commit war crimes against Ukrainians will face retribution,” the source said.

The assassination highlights escalating efforts to hold Russian military leadership accountable as Ukraine intensifies its strategy against individuals allegedly responsible for war crimes.
