With just a month to go before the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft has unveiled a revamped parkour system, bringing significant changes to one of the franchise’s signature gameplay mechanics.

The game, originally slated for release in November last year, faced delays and is now scheduled to launch on February 14. Ahead of its debut, Ubisoft has detailed the new parkour system, promising to enhance the player experience while introducing a fresh layer of complexity.

What’s New in the Parkour System?

Parkour in the Assassin’s Creed series has always been about seamless movement—running, jumping, climbing, and navigating obstacles fluidly. However, Assassin’s Creed Shadows aims to take this experience to the next level.

Ubisoft revealed that the crouch and dodge controls have been swapped, requiring even seasoned players to adjust to the new layout. Dodge has been merged with the “parkour down” mechanic, enabling a variety of new moves while preventing unintended actions.

Simon Lemay-Comtois, Associate Game Director, explained in a blog post:

“This new mapping disconnects stance-switching (standing, crouching, prone) from parkour. Now players can shift stances freely without accidentally dropping off rooftops.”

A More Restrictive, Thoughtful Approach

Unlike previous titles, Assassin’s Creed Shadows introduces a more deliberate approach to climbing and scaling. Players will now only be able to ascend surfaces that feature visible handholds, adding a layer of realism and strategy.

“We had to be more thoughtful about creating interesting parkour highways,” Lemay-Comtois shared. “This design gives us greater control over where Naoe can explore and where Yasuke cannot, highlighting the distinct playstyles of the two protagonists.”

Fan Reactions and Expectations

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among fans. While many welcome the added realism and the challenge of adapting to a new system, others are wary of the restrictions imposed on parkour freedom—a hallmark of the franchise.

As the release date approaches, excitement builds for how these changes will shape the gameplay experience in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. With the promise of more strategic movement and distinct character styles, Ubisoft’s latest installment looks set to reinvigorate the beloved series.

Mark Your Calendars

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will hit shelves on February 14, offering players a fresh take on stealth and exploration. Will the new parkour system elevate the franchise or divide its loyal fanbase? The countdown begins!
