Trump urges Putin to negotiate peace in Ukraine. Speaking on his Truth Social platform, Trump warned of severe economic consequences, including tariffs and sanctions, if a resolution is not reached soon.

Trump’s Warning to Russia

Trump made it clear that his intention is not to harm Russia but to push for peace. “If we don’t make a deal soon, I’ll have no choice but to impose high Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything Russia sells to the U.S. and other countries,” he stated.

Despite his historically cordial relationship with Putin, Trump expressed frustration with the prolonged conflict. “I’m doing Russia, whose economy is failing, and President Putin, a favor. Settle now, and stop this ridiculous war! It’s only going to get worse,” he emphasized.

A Shift in Tone

Trump’s recent remarks represent a harder stance compared to his comments during a press conference earlier in the week. While he had suggested the likelihood of additional sanctions, his latest statement underscores an urgency for Russia to act.

However, Trump refrained from confirming whether he would continue the Biden administration’s policy of supplying weapons to Ukraine. “We’re looking at that,” he said, adding that discussions with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Putin are underway.

Trump’s Commitment to Ending the War

Before his inauguration, Trump had pledged to end the Ukraine war swiftly, raising expectations of leveraging U.S. influence to bring both sides to the negotiating table. He has been vocal about his willingness to use economic measures to encourage peace, even criticizing Putin for “destroying Russia by not making a deal.”

Impact of Trump’s Approach

Trump’s statements highlight a high-stakes approach to international diplomacy, with a focus on economic pressure to expedite peace talks. While critics may view his rhetoric as inconsistent, his determination to address the conflict signals a potential shift in U.S. policy under his administration.
