Kyiv: Ukrainian officials fear that Trump’s peace talks with Russia may be sidelined Ukraine. Trump’s recent signals that he may make concessions to Moscow have sparked anxiety in Kyiv.
Kira Rudik, leader of Ukraine’s liberal opposition Golos party, stressed the importance of keeping Ukraine at the center of negotiations. “Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,” she said, emphasizing that any peace deal must include Ukrainian representatives.
Trump’s Position Raises Alarms
During a recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump suggested that Ukraine may not regain its pre-2014 borders. Rudik called this a “clear violation” of previous U.S. commitments and international agreements.
She also raised concerns about the security guarantees for Ukraine in any ceasefire agreement. “Right now, there is no sign of those having been considered or thought of,” she told CNN. Without concrete security measures, she argued, discussing a ceasefire would be pointless.
NATO Membership and European Responsibility
Another major issue is Ukraine’s long-standing ambition to join NATO. Trump’s administration has downplayed the possibility of Kyiv becoming a NATO member. His defense secretary recently called Ukraine’s NATO membership “unrealistic.”
If the U.S. steps back, European nations may have to take the lead in ensuring Ukraine’s security. Rudik stressed that without clear commitments from allies, Ukraine’s position in future peace talks remains uncertain.
The Bigger Picture
Trump’s stance marks a shift in U.S. foreign policy, moving away from the firm support Ukraine received in previous years. While peace negotiations may offer hope for an end to the war, many Ukrainians fear that leaders could make key decisions without their input.
For Kyiv, maintaining sovereignty and securing long-term security guarantees remain the top priorities. Whether Trump’s peace push will consider Ukraine’s interests fully is yet to be seen.
