LONDON: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a faster increase in defense spending before meeting US President Donald Trump.
The UK will raise military expenditure from 2.3% of GDP to 2.5% by 2027, then to 2.6% in 2028.
Starmer emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with both the US and Europe.
He rejected the idea of choosing between Atlantic allies, calling it against Britain’s history and values.
He confirmed his commitment to strengthening the UK-US alliance during his upcoming visit to Washington.
Future Targets
Starmer also set a long-term goal of raising defense spending to 3% of GDP in the next parliament.
That increase, expected after the 2029 general election, depends on future economic conditions.
Trump has pressured NATO countries to raise their defense spending to 5% of GDP.
The former US president has also signaled that the US may step back from ensuring Europe’s security.
Starmer responded by promising “the biggest sustained defense spending increase since the Cold War.”
Funding the Plan
The additional military budget will partly come from reduced international development spending.
Starmer announced a cut in development aid from 0.5% to 0.3% of GDP in the coming years.
He admitted it was a difficult decision but necessary for prioritizing national defense.
The prime minister emphasized that financial sacrifices were needed to secure Britain’s future.
“These increases can only be funded through hard choices,” Starmer told members of parliament.
Security Concerns
The move comes amid growing tensions between Europe and Trump over the war in Ukraine.
Britain aims to balance its commitments to NATO while maintaining close ties with Washington.
Starmer’s plan signals Britain’s intention to strengthen its military capabilities independently.
The government is preparing for possible shifts in US foreign policy under Trump’s leadership.
The UK is determined to remain a key player in global security and defense cooperation.
Leadership Statement
Starmer addressed parliament, calling for courage in response to modern geopolitical challenges.
He stressed the importance of protecting Britain’s national interests amid global uncertainties.
His speech highlighted the significance of maintaining alliances and adapting to new security threats.
Starmer pledged that his government would continue investing in national defense.
“When I meet President Trump, I will be clear: I want this relationship to go from strength to strength,” he said.
