Honolulu: A former UPMC doctor was arrested in Hawaii after allegedly trying to push his wife off a hiking trail. Authorities said he also struck her in the head with a rock.

Attempted murder case

Honolulu police arrested Gerhardt Konig on Monday near Pali Highway after a brief foot chase. Earlier, authorities issued a wanted poster for Konig, linking him to an attempted murder case at Pali Lookout.

Police reported that Konig and his wife were on Oahu when he allegedly tried to push her off a trail. He also used a rock to hit her in the head before leaving her for dead.

Victim’s condition

The woman survived the attack and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. She later identified her husband, 46-year-old Konig, as her attacker.

Authorities confirmed Konig was taken into custody later that evening. Charges are still pending against him.

Scenic yet dangerous

The Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout sits over 1,000 feet above the Oahu coastline. It offers scenic views of the Koʻolau cliffs and Windward Coast.

Before moving to Hawaii, Konig was an anesthesiologist at UPMC and an assistant professor at Pitt. According to UPMC, he had not been employed there for more than two years.

Former neighbors react

Friends and former neighbors told KDKA-TV that Konig worked at UPMC before moving with his wife and two children to Maui. He reportedly took what he called his “dream job.”

Ben Brown, a former neighbor in Mt. Lebanon, said he knew the Konigs for years. Although they weren’t close, he considered them good neighbors. Brown expressed shock at the news of Konig’s arrest.

Authorities continue to investigate the case, and further details may emerge soon.
