Japan: Honda Research Institute Japan (HRI-JP) has introduced its AI-powered social robot, “Haru,” at Virgen del Rocío University Hospital (HUVR) in Seville, Spain. The robot aims to improve the well-being of children undergoing long-term cancer treatment.

The official unveiling took place on November 28 at the Annual Gala against Childhood Cancer at the Casino de la Exposicion in Seville, where HUVR highlighted Haru as part of its efforts to enhance the emotional care of young cancer patients.

Haru is a compact, 30 cm (12-inch) desk-top robot designed to build connections with people through expressive communication. Developed by HRI-JP, the robot is an example of Honda’s vision for a future where AI robots coexist with humans as supportive companions. Haru uses its built-in cameras and microphones to analyze a user’s facial expressions and voice tones, allowing it to respond empathetically and offer emotional support.

The robot’s AI system enables it to understand and interact with users based on their current emotional state. It can also be linked to a wearable wrist sensor, providing more detailed insights into the user’s health and well-being. Haru’s neutral, non-human characteristics—lacking any gender, race, or nationality—make it ideal for bridging generational and cultural gaps in communication.

Since 2021, HUVR has been testing Haru in its pediatric oncology ward. The results of the trial have shown positive effects on the emotional health of children undergoing cancer treatment. Encouraged by these results, HUVR has decided to roll out 10 Haru units in the hospital’s pediatric oncology unit, where they will be used to improve the daily lives of young patients.

This collaboration marks a significant step in integrating AI technology into healthcare to improve both clinical and emotional care for vulnerable patients.
