Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is set to eliminate approximately 5% of its global workforce, equivalent to around 3,600 positions. The move, described as an effort to remove “low performers faster,” was announced in a memo by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, signaling a year of heightened expectations and intensified operations at the tech giant.

Zuckerberg emphasized that Meta is raising the bar on performance evaluations to ensure that the company retains its most talented individuals. He described the process as an acceleration of the firm’s standard performance-based cuts, which are typically spread throughout the year. Employees impacted in the U.S. will be notified by February 10, while international staff will receive updates later.
“This is going to be an intense year, and I want to make sure we have the best people on our teams,” Zuckerberg noted, as affected roles might be refilled in 2025.
Generous Severance Packages
Employees impacted by the layoffs are promised “generous severance,” although specific details were not disclosed. The cuts follow similar reductions in 2023, when Meta slashed 10,000 jobs as part of a cost-cutting initiative during what Zuckerberg dubbed the “year of efficiency.” In 2022, the company had already trimmed 11,000 positions.
