Mexico declined a U.S. request to allow a military aircraft deporting migrants to land on its territory. The U.S. had flown two C-17 transport aircraft carrying 80 migrants each to Guatemala on Friday. The refusal from Mexico disrupted the broader plan to include the country in deportation routes. Both U.S. and Mexican officials confirmed the decision, initially reported by NBC News.

Mexico Highlights Strong Relations
In response, Mexico’s foreign ministry emphasized a strong relationship and cooperation with the United States on immigration issues. “When it comes to repatriations, Mexicans will always be welcomed home with open arms,” the ministry stated. The Mexican government did not explain the decision, while its foreign ministry avoided directly addressing the denied landing request.

Reinstating “Remain in Mexico” Program
Trump’s administration has re-launched the “Remain in Mexico” program, requiring asylum-seekers to await case outcomes in Mexico. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum clarified that accepting these asylum-seekers requires explicit consent, which Mexico has not granted. The program’s reinstatement raises questions about its execution and Mexico’s involvement.

Border Policies Strain Relations
U.S.-Mexico relations have faced tension since President Trump’s national emergency declaration regarding the shared border. Trump’s administration has deployed 1,500 troops to the area, with more expected soon. Furthermore, Trump has designated Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations and proposed a 25% tariff on Mexican goods.

Gulf of Mexico Renamed
Trump added to diplomatic friction by renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. This move and escalating measures on trade and security policies have intensified discussions between the two nations. Despite these challenges, the Mexican government continues emphasizing collaboration on mutual priorities.
