WASHINGTON: Elon Musk swiftly responded to Trump’s announcement of the $500 billion AI infrastructure project, stating, “They don’t have the money.”
Musk mentioned that SoftBank’s secured funds are below $10 billion, challenging the project’s financial viability.
Trump’s Stargate Initiative
The Stargate project, backed by SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle, aims to expand AI in the U.S., starting with $100 billion.
The overall plan intends to inject $500 billion over coming years into the growing AI infrastructure.
Musk’s Ongoing Tensions with OpenAI
Musk’s criticism follows his lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman. He feels ChatGPT deviated from its nonprofit goals.
Musk has voiced concerns about OpenAI reserving its most advanced technology for private clients rather than public use.
Altman Responds to Musk’s Remarks
Altman quickly replied, calling Musk’s statement “wrong,” and inviting him to visit the first AI site already under development.
In his tweet, Altman stressed that the Stargate initiative is beneficial for the country. He acknowledged Musk’s major role as a visionary entrepreneur but urged him to put America first in his new position.
Funding and Development Uncertainty
The project’s financial plan remains undisclosed. It is possible the companies will raise funds through debt or additional equity investors.
SoftBank and OpenAI have yet to comment on how the project’s money will be secured.
