ABUJA: Nigerian soldiers have killed 76 Boko Haram and ISWAP militants during recent operations in Borno state. The announcement was made on Thursday by military spokesperson Major-General Edward Buba.
Escalating Militancy in Borno
Borno has been the center of Boko Haram’s insurgency since 2009, which has displaced millions and claimed thousands of lives. Militants have intensified attacks in 2025, including a deadly raid on the Dumba community. That attack, on Sunday, killed 40 farmers, highlighting the ongoing violence in the region.
Details of Military Operations
Between January 7 and 13, Nigerian troops conducted operations targeting militant strongholds in Damboa, Bama, and Chibok areas. They killed 24 fighters and made significant progress in other areas. Troops arrested 72 suspects, rescued eight hostages, and confiscated weapons, including AK-47 rifles, grenades, and rocket-propelled devices.
Weapons and Casualties
While no details on troop casualties were disclosed, the army recovered substantial arms and explosives during the offensive. Recovered items include improvised explosive devices and a cache of ammunition.
Efforts to Secure Borno
The operations demonstrate Nigeria’s military commitment to tackling insurgency and stabilizing the conflict-stricken Borno state. However, the region continues to experience attacks, posing challenges to long-term peace efforts.
