Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) revealed on Sunday its intention to soon restart flights to European destinations, prioritizing major UK cities. This development follows the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) lifting a suspension that had barred the airline from flying in the region.

The EASA had revoked PIA’s authorization in June 2020, citing concerns about Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) and its ability to adhere to international aviation standards. This decision was triggered by a review of pilot license validity after a devastating plane crash that claimed 97 lives.

Preparation for UK Operations
PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez Khan confirmed that the airline will now seek approval from the UK’s Department for Transport (DfT), as clearance from EASA is a critical prerequisite. Khan stated that the airline aims to restart its European operations, beginning with Paris, in the next three to four weeks.

If the UK authorities grant permission, PIA aims to relaunch flights to major cities such as London, Manchester, and Birmingham, which are expected to attract significant demand.

Financial and Operational Impact
The suspension had a significant financial toll, with PIA losing an estimated 40 billion rupees ($144 million) annually in revenue. The airline, along with the government seeking to privatize a 60% stake in PIA, actively advocated for EASA to revoke the ban.

Despite facing challenges, including a limited 34-aircraft fleet and stiff competition from Middle Eastern carriers, PIA remains optimistic about the future. The airline holds a 23% share of Pakistan’s domestic market and is eyeing growth through international routes.

Privatization Goals and Future Plans
Khan revealed that PIA’s improved revenue prospects, bolstered by access to European and UK markets, could enhance the airline’s value during privatization efforts. The airline is also considering expanding its fleet, with leasing decisions contingent on government progress with privatization.

As PIA prepares to reenter European skies, it faces both challenges and opportunities to rebuild its reputation and capture a greater share of the global aviation market.
