Manhattan: Nearly 100 protesters gathered at Trump Tower in Manhattan on Thursday, demanding the release of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil. Khalil was detained by ICE for participating in pro-Palestinian demonstrations at Columbia University. The demonstration, organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, began shortly after noon. Protesters wore red shirts reading “Not in Our Name” and “Jews Say Stop Arming Israel.” They crowded the Tower’s golden atrium, chanting in support of Khalil.

Arrests and Police Response

Protesters held banners with messages such as “Never Again for Anyone” and “Jews Say Do Not Comply.” Police arrested 98 people, with 50 taken away in zip ties. According to the NYPD, no injuries or property damage were reported. Officers cleared the area as demonstrators continued chanting. The protest was livestreamed by an organizer from the atrium’s balcony.

Religious Symbolism

One protester referenced the Jewish holiday of Purim in her speech. She compared the protest to Queen Esther’s stand against genocide in biblical times. “Today, we are using her same courage to speak out,” she said in the video. Protesters remained seated as the NYPD moved in, chanting, “Free Palestine” and “the whole world is watching.” The demonstration drew national attention due to its timing and message.

Khalil’s Detention

Khalil was arrested days earlier at his New York home by federal agents. The Trump administration revoked his green card, leading to his detention. Trump defended the decision in a Truth Social post, saying, “If you support terrorism … you are not welcome here.” Khalil’s attorney claims his arrest was retaliation for supporting Palestinians. She argues that his detention violates his right to free speech.

Ongoing Legal Battle

Khalil’s supporters argue his detention sets a dangerous precedent for activists. Legal experts believe the case could impact immigration policies and free speech rights. Protests calling for Khalil’s release are expected to continue nationwide. Advocates are urging international human rights organizations to intervene. The case has intensified debates on activism, immigration, and political expression.
