WASHINGTON: Tesla is recalling 46,096 Cybertrucks in the U.S. due to an exterior panel that may detach while driving.

The issue affects the cant rail, a stainless-steel trim panel, which can delaminate and separate from the vehicle.

Tesla announced the recall on Thursday and stated that repairs would be free of charge for affected owners.

A loose panel poses a road hazard, increasing the chances of accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

This recall is one of several for the Cybertruck since its launch last year.

Safety Concern

The detaching panel could cause risks for drivers and pedestrians if it falls off while the truck is in motion.

Tesla’s service centers will replace the defective rail assembly at no cost to vehicle owners.

NHTSA emphasized that any part detaching from a vehicle can create dangerous situations for other motorists.

Despite the recall, Tesla shares showed little change in premarket trading.

Owners of affected vehicles are encouraged to schedule repairs at Tesla service centers.

Tesla’s Record

Tesla has faced multiple recalls, with many resolved through over-the-air software updates instead of physical repairs.

In 2024, Tesla cars made up 21% of all U.S. vehicle recalls during the first three quarters.

Recall management firm BizzyCar reported that Tesla leads in recalls due to frequent software and hardware issues.

Despite ongoing concerns, Tesla remains a key player in the electric vehicle industry.

The latest Cybertruck recall highlights the challenges Tesla faces with its new vehicle designs.

Musk’s Role

Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, also serves as a senior adviser to President Donald Trump.

Musk’s involvement in politics has drawn both support and criticism from the public.

As Tesla expands, Musk continues to push for advancements in EV technology.

The Cybertruck, a highly anticipated model, has already experienced several recalls since its release.

Tesla has not announced if this issue affects Cybertrucks outside the United States.

Stock Impact

Despite the recall news, Tesla’s stock price remained relatively stable in premarket trading.

Investors seem to have expected this issue, given previous recalls affecting the Cybertruck.

Tesla’s ability to quickly address defects may have reassured stockholders.

The company’s recalls often focus on software fixes, reducing costs compared to mechanical repairs.

Future recalls could impact Tesla’s reputation if hardware issues continue.
