COLOMBO: Two tourists died in Sri Lanka after suspected pesticide poisoning following a hostel’s fumigation for bedbugs. The victims were Ebony McIntosh, a 24-year-old from Derby, England, and 26-year-old Nadine Raguse from Germany.
Both women stayed at the Miracle Colombo City hostel, where a room was treated for bedbugs. They later fell ill, suffering severe symptoms. McIntosh was hospitalized on Saturday before passing away.
Police are investigating whether the deaths resulted from toxic chemicals used in fumigation. Authorities are awaiting autopsy results.
Hostel Closure
Sri Lanka Police confirmed that the hostel is temporarily closed. It will remain shut until further investigations are completed. McIntosh’s autopsy will take place once her family arrives in Sri Lanka.
Police spokesperson Buddhika Manatunga stated that the investigation is ongoing. Officials are ensuring safety standards are reviewed in similar establishments.

A UK Foreign Office representative expressed support for McIntosh’s family. British officials are in contact with Sri Lankan authorities regarding the incident.
McIntosh’s family created a GoFundMe campaign to cover travel expenses to Sri Lanka. The campaign seeks assistance for the grieving family to bring her home.

Several hostel guests, including McIntosh, suffered severe vomiting and nausea. Some had breathing difficulties before being rushed to a hospital.
