KYIV: Ukrainian forces have detained two Chinese nationals allegedly fighting alongside Russian troops in the Donetsk region, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The individuals were arrested on Ukrainian soil and found with identity cards, bank documents, and other personal belongings.
President Zelenskyy shared the update on X, formerly Twitter, noting that this may not be an isolated case. “There’s evidence suggesting more Chinese nationals could be serving with Russian forces,” he said.
Ukraine’s intelligence agencies, the Armed Forces, and the Security Service (SBU) are now conducting further investigations to verify the extent of this involvement.
Ukraine Demands Clarification from China
Zelenskyy has directed Ukraine’s Foreign Minister to urgently reach out to China’s government for a formal explanation regarding the captured individuals and their presence in Russian ranks.
“We need a clear answer from Beijing,” Zelenskyy stated, signaling the seriousness of the matter.
Zelenskyy Urges Global Attention
In his remarks, the Ukrainian president warned that Moscow’s recruitment or use of foreign fighters points to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s determination to continue the war.
“Russia involving foreign citizens—including Chinese—in this conflict shows that Putin is not seeking peace,” said Zelenskyy. “He is doing everything to extend the war.”
He called for the United States, European allies, and the international community to take notice and respond firmly to this development.
Detainees Held by Ukraine’s Security Services
The two captured Chinese nationals are currently under the custody of Ukraine’s Security Service. Investigators are actively working to determine their roles within the Russian military and how they were recruited or deployed.
No names or further personal information have yet been disclosed by Ukrainian officials.
The president stressed the importance of international cooperation to hold all parties accountable and prevent the war from spreading further.
“This is not just a regional fight—it’s a threat to global peace,” he said.
Further details on the captured individuals and their investigation are expected in the coming days.
