TOKYO: Osamu Suzuki, former CEO and chairman of Suzuki Motor, passed away on Christmas Day from lymphoma at 94.
Known for his innovative strategies, Suzuki guided Suzuki Motor for over 40 years, transforming its minivehicle-dominant business.
The company thrived under his leadership, adopting cost-saving measures, including reduced factory ceilings and his personal thriftiness.
Born Osamu Matsuda, Suzuki adopted his wife’s family name in a tradition for families lacking male heirs.

Pioneer of India’s Automotive Revolution

In 1983, Suzuki launched Maruti 800 in India, turning the nascent market into a major global automotive hub.
The decision followed the Indian government’s search for a partner to revive its failing national carmaker, Maruti.
Suzuki invested heavily in India, delivering affordable, fuel-efficient vehicles and ensuring Maruti Suzuki led with 40% market share.
The company emphasized workplace equality, introducing open offices, shared canteens, and uniforms for executives and workers alike.

Legacy Beyond Business Success

Suzuki’s risky moves, like the 2009 Volkswagen partnership, sometimes faltered, but he upheld the firm’s independence in arbitration.
Ties with Toyota deepened under Suzuki, with collaborations including electric vehicle production and Toyota acquiring a 5% Suzuki stake.
He credited golf and dedication to work for his longevity, leading the company until age 91 and advising until death.
“Osamu Suzuki nurtured the kei car into Japan’s people’s car,” said Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda, honoring his groundbreaking legacy.
