London: In a significant announcement, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has revealed that Tube and rail fares in the capital will rise by an average of 4.6% starting on March 2, 2025. Meanwhile, bus and tram fares will remain frozen for the sixth consecutive year, allowing passengers to continue enjoying the benefit of unlimited journeys within an hour for just £1.75.

Details of the Fare Changes

The increase in Tube and rail fares will vary, with daily caps seeing increases of between 40p and 70p, depending on the travel zones. For instance, a single pay-as-you-go fare in Zone 1 will increase by 10p, bringing it to £2.90. The daily cap for travelers within zones 1 and 2 will rise by 40p, resulting in a new maximum fare of £8.90 per day. For those traveling between zones 1 and 3, the daily cap will increase by 50p, setting the price at £10.50.

Despite the fare increases, certain concessions, such as the Zip photocard, 18+ student photocard, 18-25 Carer leavers pass, and the 60+ London photocard, will remain unchanged, ensuring that vulnerable groups continue to have access to affordable travel.

Why Are Fares Increasing?

Mayor Khan emphasized that the funds generated from these fare increases would be reinvested into Transport for London (TfL) services. He stated, “Following the government’s budget, ministers made clear that to secure national funding for key transport projects in the future, TfL Tube and rail fares would need to increase in line with national rail fares.” This adjustment aims to secure vital government funding for upcoming projects like Superloop 2 and further enhancements to the Tube network.

Rail fares across the UK are also set to increase by 4.6% in March, aligning with the changes to TfL fares. Khan noted that while he has managed to keep bus and tram fares stable, the overall control over fare settings is increasingly influenced by national decisions.

The Impact of Fare Increases

According to BBC:

BBC London pointed out that while the mayor can influence transport fare settings, many of these decisions are being directed by external pressures. “Devolution is not really devolution when you are getting told what to do,”.

Alex Williams from TfL added that the new fares package aims to keep prices as affordable as possible while supporting London’s economic growth. With options like daily and weekly caps, the Hopper fare, and a range of concessions, passengers can still find the best value when using pay-as-you-go methods with contactless payment or an Oyster card.

Conclusion

As London gears up for these changes in 2025, commuters should prepare for the impact of the 4.6% increase in Tube and rail fares. While bus and tram fares remain frozen, the fare adjustments highlight ongoing discussions about funding and regulation in the city’s transport system. Passengers will need to stay informed about these changes to manage their travel budgets effectively while taking advantage of the available concessions and fare capping options.
