California: Wildfires fueled by strong winds have caused significant disruptions to major highways and freeways in Southern California, prompting urgent warnings from transportation officials. As the Palisades Fire continues to wreak havoc in the region, parts of iconic routes are now closed to ensure the safety of drivers and first responders.
Transportation Warnings
Caltrans District 7, responsible for managing transportation in Ventura and Los Angeles counties, issued a warning to residents: “Limit your non-essential travel and stay away from the areas!” This precautionary measure aims to minimize traffic congestion and allow emergency services to operate effectively.
Closures on the Pacific Coast Highway
The destructive Palisades Fire has resulted in closures along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway (State Route 1). Specifically, the southbound lanes are shut down at Cross Creek Road, while the northbound lanes are closed at the McClure Tunnel. This famous highway, known for its breathtaking views, is currently inaccessible in both directions due to the ongoing fire threat.
Interstate and State Route Closures
In addition to the Pacific Coast Highway, the Palisades Fire has also led to the closure of westbound Interstate 10 near Lincoln Boulevard. State Route 27, also known as Topanga Canyon Boulevard, is closed in both directions between Pacific Coast Highway and Mulholland Drive.
Further north, the Hurst Fire has forced the shutdown of both northbound and southbound connectors to eastbound Interstate 5. Additionally, closures on the eastbound Interstate 210 at Interstate 5 and westbound I-210 near Roxford Street have been reported. The northbound truck lanes on I-5 leading to I-210 and State Route 14 are also inaccessible.
