NEW DEHLI: Mehndi (henna) has traditionally been associated with celebrations of love and marriage, especially as an essential part of a bride’s preparations. However, a surprising new trend has emerged in India where mehndi is now being used to express heartbreak and grief, particularly after divorce.

This unique practice, called “Divorce Mehndi,” has taken social media by storm, leaving many intrigued and others divided over its purpose.

Recently, a woman named Arushi from India went viral after she shared a video on Instagram detailing her failed marriage through elaborate henna designs on her hands. The video showcased words and visuals etched in mehndi that read, “Finally Divorced”, symbolizing the pain and emotions she endured through her journey.

While some viewers expressed empathy for her, acknowledging the therapeutic expression of her grief, others criticized the act as unnecessary and overly dramatic.

This unconventional use of mehndi to narrate a personal story has sparked widespread discussions online, reflecting a modern shift in how people channel their emotions in public forums.
