Chichester: A man responsible for the manslaughter of David Hallatt in Chichester has been sentenced to seven years in prison. Kieran Egan, 31, from Birmingham, pleaded guilty to manslaughter after being found not guilty of murder at Hove Crown Court. Another defendant, Dyce Barnfield, 32, was found not guilty of both murder and manslaughter.

Additional Sentencing

Egan was sentenced at Hove Crown Court on April 4 after being held in custody. Daniel Inns, 43, from Stockton-on-Tees, also received a 10-month suspended sentence for affray. Inns had pleaded guilty at Portsmouth Crown Court on February 3 in connection with the same incident.

The Incident

David Hallatt, 57, was socializing with colleagues at The Dolphin and Anchor in Chichester on June 20, 2024. During the evening, a violent altercation occurred outside the pub around 11 p.m. Egan struck Hallatt with significant force, even though Hallatt was only trying to calm others.

Emergency services attempted to revive Hallatt at the scene, but he was pronounced dead. Egan was arrested on the spot and later charged with murder. Barnfield, who was involved in the altercation, turned himself in on July 1 and was later charged with murder.

Family’s Reaction

Hallatt’s family expressed disappointment over the sentencing, especially regarding Egan’s punishment given his violent actions. They extended gratitude to the investigators, officers, and paramedics who attempted to save Hallatt’s life.

Police Statement

Detective Constable Elliott Lander from the Major Crime Unit stated that Hallatt’s death was tragic and preventable. He described Egan’s actions as unacceptable and emphasized that Hallatt had no way to defend himself.

Complex Investigation

Police launched an immediate investigation, and an officer arrested Egan within a minute of the fatal punch. Authorities believe the sentencing provides some closure for Hallatt’s loved ones. Officers commended those who assisted in the case.
