ISLAMABAD: An accountability court in Islamabad convicted former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, for corruption. The couple faced charges in the £190 million case, with Khan receiving a 14-year sentence. Bushra was handed a seven-year sentence in connection with the case. In addition to the prison terms, both were fined substantial amounts by the court. Imran Khan must pay Rs1 million, while Bushra has been fined Rs0.5 million. Should they fail to pay these fines, Khan will serve an additional six months in prison. Bushra will have three extra months to serve.
Conviction Details
Judge Nasir Javed Rana announced the verdict, convicting both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi for various offenses. Khan was found guilty of “corrupt practices” and “misuse of authority.” Bushra Bibi was convicted for “involvement in illegal activities.” Both individuals have been held accountable for their roles in illegal activities related to the £190 million case.
Sentences and Fines
Along with the sentences, heavy fines were imposed. Imran Khan’s fine is Rs1 million, while his wife’s fine is Rs0.5 million. If either of them is unable to pay, Khan will serve six additional months and Bushra three. The sentences emphasize the seriousness of the charges against them.
Court Procedures and NAB’s Role
The announcement took place in Adiala jail, where officials of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), including Prosecutor General Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi, were present. Barristers Gohar Khan, Shoaib Shaheen, Salman Akram Raja, and other lawyers representing the couple also attended. Following the court’s decision, Bushra was immediately taken into custody and moved to Adiala jail. Sources confirmed her cell was already prepared for her.
Al-Qadir Trust University Seized
In addition to the sentences, Judge Rana’s verdict included directives on the handling of the Al-Qadir Trust University. The court ordered the federal government to take custody of the institution. This order highlights the extent of the corruption case and the related assets seized.
