ANKARA: Authorities in Turkey arrested Riza Akpolat, an opposition mayor, on accusations of rigging public tenders. Akpolat, a member of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and mayor of Istanbul’s Besiktas district, was taken into custody early Friday. He had been detained since Monday during an investigation into alleged criminal activities. The prosecutors claim he participated in bribery schemes to manipulate public tenders.
CHP Denies Accusations
Akpolat firmly denied the accusations, while the CHP labeled the arrest politically motivated. The party pointed out a lack of evidence supporting the charges. CHP leader Ozgur Ozel, in a post on X, called the arrest an attempt to tarnish the party’s image. The party views the case as part of a broader campaign to suppress dissent.
Istanbul Mayor Raises Concerns
Ekrem Imamoglu, Istanbul’s mayor and a prominent CHP member, expressed concerns about the investigation. Imamoglu suggested the probe might target him and the Istanbul municipality. “If the target is me, don’t make others suffer. Just approve my political ban,” Imamoglu said. His comments referenced his ongoing legal challenges following a 2022 conviction for allegedly insulting public officials.
Opposition Faces Increasing Pressure
In 2019, Imamoglu defeated the ruling AK Party in municipal elections, ending their 25-year control of Istanbul. His political success and his strong stance against the government have made him a prominent challenger to President Erdogan. Imamoglu’s conviction for criticizing a decision to cancel the 2019 elections led to a 31-month prison sentence, highlighting the pressures faced by opposition leaders in Turkey.
Akpolat’s Reaction
Following his arrest, Akpolat released a statement on social media, calling the case a “reputation assassination.” He vowed to continue fighting for justice and public service. “The anger of millions fighting for rights, law, and justice will overthrow your dark order,” Akpolat wrote on Facebook.
The ongoing arrests of opposition leaders have drawn criticism both domestically and internationally. Analysts view these actions as part of an intensifying crackdown on dissent ahead of key political developments.
